Today, July 17, 2012, the FBI observes the 40th anniversary of women special agents. On July 17, 1972, the first two women of the modern era entered into the FBI Training Academy at Quantico, Virginia. Prior to joining the FBI one was a nun, the other a marine.

As of January 31, 2012, the FBI had 35,629 employees. Of the 35,629, 13,766 (39%) were special agents and 21,863 (61%) were professional staff employees.
